FROM SPACEUPDATED OCTOBER 2026

North Korea from space, every month

The same NASA satellite photographs the Korean peninsula every night. South Korea and China blaze; North Korea is almost black - one small glow for Pyongyang. Each month we pick the clearest moonless night and compare it with the month before.

Pyongyang is still the only real light in North Korea, while Seoul and northeast China blaze. The Sinuiju-Dandong border crossing - where Kim crossed into China on 24 October - shows as a faint string of lights.
