STATE MEDIA DECODEDWEEKLY

What Pyongyang really means

Every week we take the most striking line from North Korea's state media - KCNA, Rodong Sinmun or a Kim family statement - and explain in plain English what's actually being said.

WEEK OF 20-26 OCT 2026 · KIM YO JONG, VIA KCNA
"If the border is fortified, the danger of military conflict in this area will undoubtedly be eliminated."
WHAT IT REALLY MEANS

Walls mean peace - so the guns, fences and mines going up are presented as a peace plan.

  • This is the regime's standard way of framing a build-up: every new weapon or barrier is described as defensive, and any danger is blamed on the South.
  • In the same statement she announced loudspeaker propaganda along the whole border and said "tactical hunting teams" are taking new positions - a phrase outside analysts have not yet explained.
  • Days later, 122mm guns appeared in the open 1.5 km from South Korea. The words came first; the hardware followed.

Watch for: If state media starts calling South Korean activity a "provocation" that "will not be tolerated", the language has moved from defence to justification for action.
